Gravity separation is a key process for removing soil, stones and glass and other heavier contaminants. It can also be useful for removing lighter contaminants and damaged/shrivelled grains.
Goods are shaken on a sloping mesh table, the shaking process is designed to drive goods up to the top of the slope, a large fan blows air through the mesh table and this causes the lighter fractions to ride on the air currents and drift to the bottom of the slope. The goods therefore end up segregated according to their specific gravity.
