This process is very useful for removing weevil holes and sprouted and cracked grains from pulses.

Needling was initially developed for the UK pea crop but has proved very useful for removing weevil holes and sprouted and cracked grains from imported pulses.

It consists of a large rotating drum which is lined with 22,000 needles, as the drum rotates the goods tumble over and over in the base of the drum and the needles are pushed through the product at the bottom of the drum, any seeds that have cracked or weevil bored skins are caught on the point of a needle and lifted out of the mass of the product, these are then discarded whilst the undamaged seeds remain in the drum.
